Cozic is an artist duo combining Monic Brassard, born in Montreal, in 1944, and Yvon Cozic born in Saint Servant, France, in 1942. These artists would like to see themselves, they specify, "as attempting to redefine the artist's role in society and revise the creative process." This questioning of the artist's status has effected their work, extending beyond this questioning and even going against the practice of art. They take issue with materials, for example, that are called "noble" and instead use fabric such as plush, synthetic fur, satin, vinyl and feathers to emphasise a material's tactile nature. The intellectual factor in their work is replaced with direct physical contact in which duration and temporality occur. Rediscover time and use it with pleasure. "Moments of pleasure are not well known," Cozic claims, "they are like an intuitive collage." Choosing banal, everyday objects and material, Cozic ennobles them, encouraging the spectator to look at them differently, to see them critically. Spectators are indiced to think about the emotions that they feel while remembering their impressions of smell or touch. Cozic's practice is deeply involved with space, time and the ephemeral: and is also thoroughly and perceptively committed to the Other - called partner, spectator or public. In short, the Lachine Canal site lends itself to so many concerns of this nature that the artists Cozic can not be overlooked for this project. |
