A
rtefact 2001 Urban Sculptures is the first edition of a triennial event presenting ephemeral public sculptures and installations. The exhibition will take place from June 26 to September 30, along the banks and on the water of the Lachine Canal from Des Seigneurs Bridge to Sir George-Étienne-Cartier Walkway. The participing artists are Jean-Pierre AUBÉ, Pierre BOURGAULT, Herménégilde CHIASSON, COZIC, Michel DE BROIN, Michelle HÉON, Marie-Chrystine LANDRY, Francine LARIVÉE, John McEWEN and Michel SAULNIER

The Centre de diffusion 3D (CDD3D) and its new affiliate, the Centre d’Art Public (CAP), would like Artefact to be more than just another triennial or biennial Montreal event. Artefact is to be a special occasion that will bring together ephemeral outdoor sculptures and installations and integrate them into public places laden with history and all kinds of rich infrastructures. These locations very likely will serve as departure points for artists to investigate various realities whether looking to the past or at present and future situations. Artefact gives preference to artists who go out and meet the public, temporarily installing themselves in natural enviroment or in functional spaces in order to create their work and integrate it into the environment where it is presented. This event will hightlight contemporary artworks that attempt to bring art and life closer together, works that communicate with and engage the public. Artefact will also be a "nomadic" event : every three years, an exhibition will be set up at a different site on the Island of Montréal.
