Michel Saulnier was born in Rimouski, in 1956. He claims that his work recount anecdotes. He states, "And what, precisely, if everything that scholars, journalists, politicians and artists tell us are only stories? Politics bore me but poetry delights me. Also, I hope that while reading these modest and subjective anecdotes you can carry on with the dreams already suggested by the works." Whether it is a matter of painted objects, installations of sculptures, cottages, sexual attributes or bear cubs in playing poses, the artist invents basic images, which arouse unconscious memories that are buried within us all, and suggest intimate pleasures of the body and the senses. However, beyond this apparent innocence and straightforwardness, Michel Saulnier's art is related to the history of art and of sculpture. Polysemous, his works are open to many interpretations. "I am trying" he emphasises, "to situate myself on the borderline of genres, to create art that has a popular appearance, but that is minimalist in its presentation and production. I like to say that I make conceptual art for kids." Over the uears, Michel Saulnier has become one of the most inventive practitioners of what is called "public art." |
